British history: 17th Century


1641 English Civil war begins.

King Charles I, who believed he was descended from god, declares war on Parliament after they drafted the Grand Remonstrance. This stated that Parliament should govern the country, and not the King. The catalysis was when Charles marched into the House of Commons with a troop of soldiers to arrest five MPs.

1649

Charles I beheaded. Oliver Cromwell declared Lord Protector, England becomes a republic.

1660

Charles II, Charles I's son, returns to England after exile in the Netherlands, in what was called the Restoration.

1665

The Black death outbreak strikes London.

1666

The Great fire of London.

1688

The Dutch ruler - Prince William of Orange, disposes the catholic James II, who Protestants despised. William was James II's son-in-law, he married James's daughter Mary, who like James was Protestant.
