Hungarian history: Pre 1241

Hungary Pre 1241 (dashed lines show modern-day Hungarian borders)

1222

Andrew II (1175-1235) issues the Golden Bull, a royal document supplied with a golden seal, stating the basic rights and privileges of the nobility; it plays a role similar to that of the Magna Carta of 1215.

1241

The Mongolian Tatars devastated the country. Their presence, which lasted a year, halted development for at least a century. After the warfare with the Hungarians, the Tatars did not continue towards the west. This due to a power struggle in the Tatar homeland, causing Batu Khan to return home.
